Sigrid huelo mal

haha...ok so that title wont make sense to most....but im pretty sure at least Sigrid and Charlotte will get a kick out of it. The truth is that Guatemala in general huelo mal (smells bad). It is one of those things that you never quite get used to....but i suppose thats a good thing. Today I started at the dump, then went to the limonada, and then back to the dump again. I have to say that one of the hardest things to see here in Guate is the little kids running around completely filthy and barefoot. Just running and jumping and playing....as happy as can be...but totally barefoot. It really makes you think about all the things back home that you think you have to have....iphones, laptop, new clothes, etc and here there are kids with no shoes. There was one little boy at the dump who had shoes but no laces....and as he was sitting there he was digging around in the dirt and found a piece of wire that he was trying to string into his shoes as make shift laces. It totally just broke my heart. I asked Joey if he had any string and he didn't but he said he had more laces on his boots than he needed so he cut off a piece of his laces and strung them onto the boys shoe. You should have seen how the little boy just lit up! and of course he then proceded to follow joey around where ever he went with a huge grin on his face. For me, it reminded me that sometimes it really can just be the smallest things that we can do for each other that makes all the difference. Imagine how much better of a world it would be if every day we all looked for something our neighbor lacked...even if it is as small as shoelaces.

  3. Tell Pastor Evan "koinonia". It's from unit #11, lesson #2 for his Sunday School class. (Maybe he'll do devotions on it tonight.) It is the Greek word for fellowship. 1 John centers around the idea that your relationship with fellow believers is an expression of your relationship with God. Chapter 4, verses 11-12 say, "Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us." So, I believe that not only are the Guatemalan people you help being blessed, but you all are too, as you work together and fellowship together. Amy, Jose feels your love and God will bless you for that. Joey, the little boy who now has part of your boot laces felt your love, and God will bless you for that. We see the team's demonstration of love for these people, and we are blessed to know you. Lindsay made me think of this when she wrote that we'd be better off every day if we all looked for something our neighbor lacked and helped them with it. One of our neighbors just made a pass with his plow down our driveway and I pretty much jumped with joy. Rachel is so right that it's encouraging to see God answering prayers through you all. I hope you all are encouraged by it, and each other, and that helps you keep going these next few days.
    Luv,
    Dawn
